The Energy Factory in Knappenrode is a fascinating reminder of Saxony’s industrial heritage. Factory, which was decommissioned in 1993 is now an industrial museum. Knappenrode Energy Factory offers a fascinating insight into the history of mining. Since 1994, the Lusatian Mining Museum with an exhibition area of over 25 hectares, can be explored in the factory building. Here you can watch machines in operation to understand which levers have to be moved to generate energy.
A briquetting plant was built in 1914. It was called "Eintracht Werke". Production began in October 1918, and two other plants were then built. After 1945 the plant was renamed "Glückauf", some equipment removed and production continued. In 1965 the plant turned out more than one and a half million tons of briquettes. Modernisation was neglected and the plant stagnated and closed in 1993.
